I remember flipping through the channels years back and
running across Charmed by complete accident. I thought it was just
ridiculous. It seemed just off. Maybe the characters were just too wooden
and unbelievable, or maybe the concept was odd -whatever the reasoning
back then, I was not impressed. I watched it for lack of viewing options
and didn't give it much thought afterwards. Yet, just about every week
after that, I ran into it (could it have been some magical coincidence?)
and in spite of myself, I ended up watching it. I'd say after a few weeks
of it, I found myself actually liking it. The show had grown on me (which
is very hard to do). Charmed is now entering into its eighth season. That alone says I am not the only one that found the show to pass muster after a rocky start. As with all series, you cannot help but find yourself following the characters. The hook is set to see who will end up with whom and just what strange demonic or otherworldly force will appear next. Since it's about witches, it certainly takes a break from the normal reality series that seem to be plaguing the television, and that alone is refreshing. I seem to be against the masses when it comes to finding the clogging of reality shows just a bit unbearable these days. Season two had a lot in store for the Halliwell sisters. Each season their powers grow and change so there are a few enhanced skills to help battle the more powerful demons that come to call. Faced with various Warlocks, Demons, Darklighters and even The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse - in addition to keeping their magical secrets from the mortals (wonder why they didn't call them muggles!) and toss in the romantic struggles of the trio, makes for a very entertaining season. The music aspect of it (which I found to enjoy immensely) is also growing in season two. If I recall rightly, it is the first show that started having songs interspersed in the episodes in this manner, and season two treats you to even having name bands playing a song at the end (playing of course at the famous P3 Halliwell club of course). For a music lover it is a definite plus. It also delves into the more personal aspect of the characters and how they are changing and growing into more mature adults. Phoebe in particular is not the epitome of a little sister anymore; instead she is growing into her own and finding a maturity I had hoped she would find in the first season. Season two is the first glimpse of how she changes into the Phoebe most are familiar with in the later seasons, shedding the childlike behavior for the responsible advice giving sister. This is also is the season in which Piper and Leo first face the barb of their love and you can see their future taking shape in this season, foreshadowing the complex plotlines in later episodes. And let's not forget Prue who in this season is must deal with the loss of her love (first season) and come to terms with her own life and decide where she is going in the future, and that is completely different from anything one would have assumed in the first season. As for the whole six disc set, I am new to the viewing of the TV shows on DVD so being able to see them without commercials was a treat. Having to deal with beginning and end credits, and then hopping back to the main menu each time to view another episode was not (especially when there are 22 of them to check out!). I definitely wished for a 'play all' option. I didn't run across special features really so over all it was not a flash and dazzle that I have become accustomed to with a DVD. However, it does its job of giving you the season two so I can forgive it's shortcomings for flash. I would certainly give it a watch; though I do recommend watching the first season since they are all tied tightly together (you may get a bit lost if you don't have the beginning back story). Pretty soon you'll be hooked like the rest of us and anxiously awaiting those leaves changing to fall to catch the next anticipated season! Source: Counting Down DVD Reviews |
