Johnny the Gent is a character from the book "Crossed, Double-Crossed".
About 20 years ago two brothers, Dan and Eddie Mullen, wrote this mystery novel together. When they got sucked into the story, Dan was shot by Johnny the Gent and the book expelled him. Eddie was led to believe that the cops shot his brother. Until the book ended as set out by the brothers – with the finding of the Burmese Falcon – he couldn't leave the book.

When Eddie Mullen destryed the Falcon the story ends and he, Paige and Brody were expelled.

The original title was "Charmed noir".

Meaning:
"The Postman always rings twice" was one of Lana Turner's film noirs. There was a remake in 1980 it never reached the quality of the original version of 1946.

Paige: They wrote themselves in as the heroes of their own books. Like Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe.
Meaning:
Sam Spade was the leading character in the novel and movie The Maltese Falcon (1931). The original novel was written by Dashiell Hammett, and was first published as a serial in the pulp magazine Black Mask.

Philip Marlowe is a fictional private eye created by Raymond Chandler in a series of detective novels including The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye. Marlowe's character is typical of a genre of hardboiled crime fiction that originated with Dashiell Hammett and Black Mask magazine in the 1920s where the private eye is a pessimistic and cynical observer of a corrupt society. Yet the enduring appeal of Marlowe and other "hard-boiled dicks" like Hammett's Sam Spade lies in their tarnished idealism.
