Voodoo got its start in New Orleans in the mid - to late 18th
century, with the import of slaves from the French islands colonies like e.g.
Santo Domingo. The most influential voodoo practicioners were the voodoo queens with the male voodoo root doctors ranking second. One of the most powerful of these queens in the mid 1800s was Marie Laveau. She was said to have possessed strong supernatural powers. Gris-gris bags were left on doorsteps by voodoo practicioners who meant to do harm against the people in the house. Usually they were filled with herbs and powders, sometimes with pieces of snakeskiin, dried lizards, powdered bones, nail clippings or hair. Voodoo temples were called hounforts. Loas The spirits summoned during voodoo ceremonies. Kind loas, representing warmth and stability, were called Rada loas. Petro loas are the dark forces who can be violent and deadly. When a worshipper calls on any petro loa to perform an harmful act on their behalf, they must then vow to serve that loa. However one can only worship and serve one loa. This deal is called an angujan. If the deal is not fulfilled, vengeance will come to the worshipper. Zdenek, petro loa Zdenek needs human blood to keep him happy The loa appears in form of a vulture. It killed Caroline Claudel and Andre. Another summoned petro loa in form of a snake killed Gabrielle Toussaint. Zombies A person can be turned into a zombie by feeding someone a very powerful toxin till the person appears to be dead. The voodoo practicioner who poisoned the victim revives it then with herbs and spells. The victim is in a kind of suspended comatose state capable only of obeying the one who has poisoned him or her. With no will of its own the body will be used by its new master for a while till it dies. There is no cure known. Secret societés Groups who practise black magic associated with the petro loas. Drums are used in most voodoo ceremonies. Vèvè A symbol that is used to summon a loa. Kane and Daphne Montague, mortals A couple working for a secret societe Gabrielle Toussaint and Andre Members of a secret societés. Gabrielle turned her sister Helene Toussaint into a zombie. |

Wendy Staub Wendy Corsi Staub grew up in the "snow belt" in western New York State. When her third grade teacher praised her essay about Abraham Lincoln, Wendy was inspired and decided then and there that she would become an author when she grew up. With that goal in mind, she worked part-time in two local bookstores and majored in English with a minor in Creative Writing at the State University of New York. At 27, Wendy sold her first novel-which went on to win an RWA Rita award for Best Young Adult Novel-to Harper, a few months after she married a NY advertising executive. They moved for four years to New England, where they lived by the sea and Wendy sold more than a dozen novels. After the birth of their first child, they were homesick for New York City and returned, buying a house and settling in the suburbs. They soon had a second child. Wendy's career broadened to include ghostwriting for several well-known authors, including Fabio; co-authoring a mystery series with former New York City mayor Ed Koch; and publishing books in diverse genres such as historical and contemporary romance, television and movie tie-in, biography, suspense, and horror. Today, Wendy is officially a soccer mom, and the author of more than fifty published novels under her own name and three pseudonyms: Wendy Markham, Wendy Morgan, and Wendy Brody. Her website |
