Title: Between worlds

Creatures: De Vermis Mysteriis ("Mysteries of the worm") a collection of dark magic spells. Embossed on the cover is a serpent.

The book was created about 500 years ago by two twin brothers, Mileager and Malvolio De Vermis.
The brothers were close for many years until the elder, Mileager, began to develop an interest in magic. Becoming adept in the ways of magic made Mileager a very powerful man. The De Vermis Mysteriis originally was conceived as a work which would have the power to do great good.
Mileager set out to create a collection of the world's most powerful spells, particularely spells to heal, to restore balance.

However the more spells Mileager collected the more Malvolio longed to control them. He was willing to do whatever it took to overcome his brother. Mileager was able to imprison his brother into the book until the end of the world. Mileager then disappeared. It turned out that he was kept hidden at a safe place by the Elders. When his brother came up with a plan to bring an end to the world and thus free himself, Mileager left his sanctuarity to stop him once and for all.

Portals and Wards
A ward is a grouping of portals or doorways through the energy barrier which maintains between the realms of the living and
the dead. While individual portals occur throughout the world, wards occur only in places of significant psychic
activity. For this reason, they are particularely important.
While functioning as doorways the portals operate differently in each realm. For the dead the portals are
permeable, they may pass through them, particularely if invited or summoned. But except for certain times of the
year - e.g. All Saints' Day - for the living portals are not permeable.

Portals may be damaged by psychic energy. The type of damage depends on the realm in which the attack occur.
Destroying ward portals from the dead side will leave the energy barrier open to the living and the dead. Destroying
them on the living side will seal the barrier closed.

Particular concern should be paid to damaged ward portals. If too many portals in a ward become damaged, the
entire ward may fail. This in turn may cause the permanent disruption of the energy barrier which maintains the
living-dead status quo.

These sites are in fact the location of dimensional portals, and they're under attack.

But the demon working against them is no ordinary monster; it's a wraith, the product of a grief-stricken young witch seeking to resurrect her lost love.
